We don’t limit ourselves to what we have done in the past

This page holds something different

Below is a gallery of projects we remember fondly for a variety of reasons.

Some are creative in nature. Some are small in scale. Some were cultural, exploratory, or simply enjoyable to make.

Not every project here has a formal story attached, and not every one needs one.

In some pieces, BrandCom’s way of thinking is clearly visible in the imagery and execution.

In others, it sits more quietly beneath the surface, expressed through tone, structure, or restraint.

One part of our philosophy that clearly comes though is that we have never limited ourselves to what we’ve done in the past.

In 2008, Geoff was invited to be Executive Producer on Jan Hellriegel’s comeback album, All Grown Up.

Geoff’s named the album and also wrote the lyrics to “Under the Stars,” one of the songs featured on the album, the first and only time Jan has recorded a song using someone else’s lyrics.

Red Witch Analog Pedals

Some mountains are simply harder to climb than others

The video shown here was made in Russia by PedalZoo, playing a Red Witch guitar pedal through an electric organ.

It’s here simply because it’s a great expression of what the brand became, and because it’s cool.

Sometimes the most important work is asking the uncomfortable question

We poured an enormous amount of heart, energy, and thinking into Red Witch Analog, and it produced some of our strongest marketing work.

The product was exceptional — a New Zealand-born guitar pedal brand used by top artists around the world, and the brand developed a loyal, passionate following.

Ultimately, however, Red Witch could not escape its origins as a boutique brand.

The global musical instrument market is brutally competitive, dominated by companies with decades of scale, distribution, and manufacturing advantage.

Breaking out of that gravitational pull proved difficult, and in many ways the brand’s own community preferred it that way.

Craft, character, and intimacy were what people valued most.

Today, Red Witch continues as a boutique guitar pedal brand, still making some of the best products in the world.

Demand Side Response — someone else’s problem?

There comes a point in a career where, if you have a voice and a perspective, you should use it, especially when the stakes are high. I was asked by Aluminium International Today to write an independent thought-piece on energy.

I believed (and still do) the aluminium industry needed to confront a difficult but unavoidable conversation about energy, flexibility, and responsibility in a decarbonising world.

This piece was intended to be provocative, informed, and constructive; to challenge assumptions and encourage deeper thinking across the sector. I also know that when you want to change mind-sets you have to be engaging.
